Installation Guide#

Prerequisites#

  • Python 3.13 or higher

  • pip (latest version recommended)

  • Graphviz, to draw trees (brew install graphviz or apt-get install graphviz)

Standard Installation#

The package is not on PyPI yet, so install it from GitHub:

pip install "git+https://github.com/vela-research/think-reason-learn.git"

To use it from a coding agent such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, install it this way in your project, then ask the agent to read the quick start and build a model on your data.

From Source#

git clone https://github.com/vela-research/think-reason-learn.git
cd think-reason-learn
poetry install

Development Setup#

For contributing or running tests/docs:

poetry install --with dev,docs
poetry run pre-commit install # Optional: code quality hooks

Troubleshooting#

  • If you encounter dependency issues, ensure your Python version is 3.13 or newer.

  • Set the API key for each model provider you use as an environment variable: OPENAI_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, GOOGLE_AI_API_KEY or XAI_API_KEY. A .env file in the working directory also works.

  • See Contributing for more dev tips.
